Sažetak: Fish is an animal-based food rich in protein and highly unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, the regular consumption of which has a significant impact on human health. Consumer preferences and ways of consuming fish are influenced by socioeconomic characteristics, changes in eating habits and the availability of fish products. The aim of the research was to determine the sociodemographic characteristics and preferences of fish consumers in the HerzegovinaNeretva Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The survey method was used to collect data, and a questionnaire was used as an instrument (N = 162). All respondents, 90 females and 72 males, of different age groups, stated that they consumed fish. The results showed that most consumers bought fresh fish while canned is the least appealing to them. The dominant type of fish consumed by the respondents was trout. Of the freshwater fish species carp were also the most consumed, and of the marine species, sardines and hake were the most consumed, and the least represented species was catfish. Fish markets and shopping centers being the most preferred places for purchase. The chi-square test revealed that the choice of where to purchase fish was influenced by the consumer's age, income, education and place of residence.
